Cavity Wall Ties

Image picture-171.jpg

All walls that are built with a cavity need to be stabilised with the use of cavity wall ties. They maintain the structural integrity of the wall preventing movement of each masonry leaf.

In older properties the use of mild steel cavity wall ties used decades ago in the original construction can cause problems. Water penetration to the outer leaf can result in wall tie corrosion of the original cavity wall ties and lead to structural failure of the wall.

In new construction these cavity wall ties are usually made of stainless steel and are built in to the mortar joints as the wall is constructed.

Remedial cavity wall ties can be inserted in what is referred to as a retro fit. They are installed through pre-drilled holes straight into each of the outer and inner leaves of masonry from one side. These replacement cavity wall ties are secured by screw action (dry fix) mechanical expansion (mechanical ties) or by the application of resin to bond the new tie to the masonry (resin bonded).
